The Dante Quartet’s new CD of Stanford’s String Quartets Numbers 5 & 8 (SOMM CD0160) has been given a warm welcome by the critics. The Dante Quartet has also taken the Fifth Quartet into its repertoire and performed the work to great acclaim in recitals during its summer festival in Devon and as part of its November 2016 recital tour of Japan.
This CD is the first volume in a projected complete cycle of Stanford’s eight String Quartets and String Quintets to be recorded by the Dante Quartet for SOMM Records. The next volume, which will include the Quartets numbers 3 & 4, will be recorded early in 2017. Renowned Stanford scholar Jeremy Dibble is General Editor and Advisor for this project. He is overseeing the editing of the unpublished scores of five of these works. Six of the Quartets and the Second String Quintet will be receiving first recordings.
Stanford Society Chairman, John Covell, commented that “the Stanford Society is very pleased to be able to provide financial support to these recordings. This is an important part of Stanford’s work which has been unjustly neglected. We are delighted that these outstanding new recordings by the Dante Quartet will make an important cycle of chamber music available for the first time to lovers of English music.“
The Stanford Society is seeking sponsors to help underwrite the cost of these recordings. Please contact the Society’s Chairman, John Covell, at cvstanfordsociety@msn.com for further information on sponsorship opportunities.
