The Revenge was one of Stanford’s most popular works with audiences and choral societies in Victorian Britain. It sets the ballad of the same name by Tennyson that portrays a sixteenth century ship, The Revenge, captained by Sir Richard Grenville, locked in battle against fifteen ships of the Spanish fleet off the coast of the Azores.
‘The little Revenge’ fought against huge odds but ultimately was defeated by the Spanish, the crew captured and Sir Richard Grenville dies of his wounds but not before proclaiming “I have fought for Queen and Faith like a valiant man and true; I have only done my duty as a man is bound to do. With a joyful spirit I Sir Richard Grenville die!”
