The Northern Opera Group (NOG) will present Stanford’s opera Much Ado About Nothing as part of the 2019 Leeds Opera Festival on August 23rd and 24th. The performances will take place in the Morley Town Hall in a suburb of Leeds We understand that this production will be with a specially prepared reduced orchestration.
Much Ado was premiered at Covent Garden on May 30th and June 3rd 1901, conducted by Luigi Macinelli. The libretto was by Julien Sturgis. It was subsequently presented in Leipzig in 1902. More recent performances have been at the Wexford Festival in 1964 and in London, by Opera Viva, in 1985. You Tube has the duet “ Tell me who told you so” from Much Ado recorded at a Europe Day Concert in St. John’s Smith Square in 2013.
