The Stanford Archive at Newcastle University
The Charles Villiers Stanford archive housed in the Special Collections at the Robinson Library at Newcastle University comprises the largest archive of Stanford manuscripts, published music and other material related to Stanford’s music and life.
This collection was assembled by Frederick Hudson, Lecturer in music at Newcastle University, between 1952and 1987. He persuaded several of Stanford’s publishers and other holders of Stanford’s scores to permanently loan autographed scores to the collection and he obtained photocopies of many of the published scores.
The Collection contains catalogues of Stanford’s music prepared by both Frederick Hudson and Christopher Howells (1992). There is also a list of all of Stanford’s letters to the Times written between 1885 and 1924.
Dr.Adele Commins, Head of Music at Dundalk Institute of Technology, Dundalk, County Louth, Ireland has written an article on the Stanford Archive which may be accessed via the following link: http://www.iaml.info/iaml-uk-irl/resources/commins_article.pdf
