As part of nationwide events marking the centenary of the end of the First World War, Adrian Partington conducts the first complete performance of Mass Via Victrix (1914-1918) by Charles Villiers Stanford. Completed in 1919 it was Stanford’s personal commentary on the war – written to celebrate victory and commemorate the fallen – the concert is completed by Ravel’s Tombeau de Couperin and music by F.S.Kelly, who wrote a poignant work in memory of his friend who was killed at Gallipoli, before sadly later dying in battle himself.
